Paradox Interactive Acquires Another Studio

Paradox Interactive acquired a second studio in recent weeks, adding Iceflake Studios, developer of Surviving the Aftermath, bringing the number of in-house studios to nine.

It has been a busy year for the publisher. Just two weeks ago, the company added mobile developer Playrion Game Studio to its list, reaffirming its plans to produce more mobile spin-offs. The company also announced the launch in Spain of Paradox Tinto, a new studio headed by "Europa Universalis" designer Johan Andersson.

The "Surviving" series opened with Haemimont Games' excellent "Surviving Mars," but the former Tropico developer has not returned for the sequel. Surviving the Aftermath has a broadly similar premise, but has been replaced by a post-apocalypse, with plenty of rules associated with it, including bandits, scavenging, and buildings made of scrap.

I took a look at the management game just before it went into early access on the Epic Games Store, and there have been many updates since the initial "Surviving the Aftermath" hands-on, introducing things like ideologies and saunas.

"When we started talking with Paradox, we found that we had a very like-minded approach," says co-founder Lasse Liljedahl. "The collaboration with "Surviving the Aftermath" has been great and showed us how similar our development approaches are. So when Paradox proposed that we become part of the family, we were excited." [Surviving the Aftermath is currently only available on the Epic Games Store, but will soon be available on Steam.
