Sea of Thieves has surpassed 15 million players, with over 1 million of those players coming solely from the recent Steam release.
Launched in 2018 to lukewarm reviews, Sea of Thieves has clearly grown a lot. Interestingly, the majority of its 15 million players began their piracy adventures in 2020, and the first six months of this year saw more players than the entirety of 2019, which itself surpassed 2018's numbers. In June of this year alone, there were 3.3 million players, and Rare attributes this success to the game's release on Steam, which launched on June 3.
The game has been a regular Steam top-selling game since its launch on the storefront, and at the time of this writing is in third place behind Far Cry 5 (which is heavily discounted) and Death Stranding. when first released in 2018, the game didn't necessarily overwhelm anyone, but the combination of Xbox and PC cross-play and five major content updates interspersed with smaller monthly updates has helped to build a dedicated fan base.
Now that the PC version is also available on Games Pass and the player base is growing like never before, there is no better time for would-be Buccaneers (or Stargazers) to get into Sea of Thieves.
