Sabrent Doubles Maximum Capacity of PCIe 4.0 SSDs, But Priced at $750

Sabrent is making waves in the SSD space. First with the ultra high-capacity 8TB Rocket Q PCIe 3.0 drive with fast read and write speeds, and now with the first ever PCIe 4.0 SSD with 4TB capacity quietly announced.

Oddly enough, there is no mention of this model on Sabrent's website. Nor do we see any formal announcement, despite the fact that it makes us want to shout it from the mountaintops (the maximum capacity of other PCIe 4.0 SSDs is 2TB). Perhaps that will be forthcoming. In the meantime, the world's only 4TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is available on Amazon (via TweakTown) for $749.99 (or $769.99 including heatsink).

This is obviously expensive, but it is half the price of the 8TB Rocket Q. In other words, the buyer pays the same price per gigabyte, but gets a faster interface.

The caveat with PCIe 4.0 is that to take full advantage of the speed, these drives must be connected to a supported platform. Currently, PCIe 4.0 is the exclusive domain of AMD and its X570 and B550 chipsets.

Sabrent rates this model as capable of up to 4,900 MB/s sequential read and 3,500 MB/s sequential write. [Write speeds are not notably higher than the fastest PCIe 3.0 SSDs, but read speeds are significantly higher. For reference, Samsung's 970 Evo Plus, the best SSD for gaming, offers up to 3,400 MB/s read and 3,300 MB/s write.

Amazon also offers a 2TB Rocket Q4 model for $319.99 (or $349.99 with heatsink), which is a better deal at about $0.16 per gigabyte compared to about $0.19 per gigabyte for a 4TB drive.
