The box art for Halo Infinite is a true throwback to the past.

On Thursday, July 23, Microsoft and 343 Industries will premiere gameplay from the upcoming "Halo Infinite." Today, the box art for "Halo Infinite" was unveiled for the first time, revealing a bit of what's to come.

The first thing you will notice is that the box art blatantly follows that of the first game in the series, "Halo: Combat Evolved," released in 2001. The Halo ring itself curves in the background, ships fly across the sky, and Master Chief stares resolutely forward, ready to shoot his many (and many) enemies. The words "Welcome back, Chief" are also on the nose.

Also, at the very beginning of the clip, we see the Chief's visor reflecting someone, presumably someone he is about to waste. This could very well be one of the Vanished, a rebel faction of the Covenant who played the role of villains in "Halo Wars 2"; 343 had previously hinted at the return of the Vanished in "Halo: Infinite."

What is clearly new in the teaser, as many with sharp eyes have noticed, is a small nodule on Master Chief's left forearm, widely believed to be a grappling hook. Rumors circulated yesterday via VG247 that the grappling hook will be an equipment pickup like the one in Halo 3, but no one knows at this time how (or if) it will be included in the campaign.

For a proper first look at Halo Infinite and other upcoming plans, watch the Xbox Game Showcase tomorrow at 9am PT / 12pm ET on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. There will be no non-game topics at this showcase: "No business, device, or similar news, just games," Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said last week.
