Avowed is a first-person epic RPG set in the same world as Pillars of Eternity, and is likely to be Obsidian's take on The Elder Scrolls. It makes a lot of sense: for the past decade, Obsidian has garnered praise and love for its modern take on the beloved RPG subgenre; Pillars of Eternity is a love letter to great CRPGs like Baldur's Gate; The Outer Worlds" evoked the grim satire and meaningful choices of "Fallout: New Vegas" (also produced by the company). And while "The Elder Scrolls 6" may still be years away, the idea of a fantasy first-person epic RPG is exciting.
Details are scarce at this time. We'll update this article as the latest information about Avowed comes to light, including release dates, how it will actually play, and any other information that we couldn't glean from the cinematic trailer. Here is what we know so far.
Avowed was first revealed at this year's Xbox Games Showcase along with an ominous cinematic trailer. What we saw was brief, but it revealed several important details. Most importantly, Avowed is a first-person RPG in the vein of The Outer Worlds, or more accurately, Skyrim. Gameplay was not shown, but the trailer ends from that perspective." As the "player" swings his sword and traces spells in the air, purple energy charges his hands and invisible enemies (presumably very large and made of fire) approach. This is cool and reminiscent of the scene in "The Lord of the Rings" where the Balrog hunts down Frodo and his party.
Not much else is revealed, but the trailer's narrator specifically emphasizes the oath, which seems to be a central theme of the story. A clever player on the Avowed subreddit also deciphered the runes inscribed on the sword in the trailer, realizing that it is a language already present in Pillars of Eternity, and discovered that the sword's name is Oathbinder.
We don't know. The public trailer does not hint at a window or even a possible year. However, given that Obsidian is also working on Grounded, an Early Access survival game, and is working on two DLCs for The Outer Worlds (one of which was released just before Avowed), the release of Avowed is several years could be several years away.
Currently, all that can be confirmed is that Avowed is a first-person RPG, but rumors have long persisted that the game will mirror elements of Skyrim and other Elder Scrolls RPGs. Last year, Obsidian posted several job postings that might indicate what kind of game Avowed will be.
It is not clear whether these job postings are for Avowed or Grounded, but along with the day/night cycle and branching dialogue, they mention "combat with an emphasis on first-person melee combat" and "both first-person and third-person animations for combat action" are also mentioned. This is exactly what one would expect from an Obsidian first-person RPG.
While much of Avowed remains a mystery, several self-proclaimed Microsoft insiders have come forward to share details about Avowed's development. The biggest leaker of them all is Sponger, a member of the gaming forum Resertera, who recently dumped a long list of gameplay features that Obsidian is rumored to be trying to implement in Avowed The veracity of Sponger's leak, corroborated by another well-known Microsoft leaker named Klobrille.
The following are merely rumors at this time and are not confirmed. The following is from Sponger:
It is unclear what connection Avowed has to the characters and events of Pillars of Eternity and its sequels, except that it is set somewhere in Eora. It is very possible that Avowed takes place on a different continent or in a different time period, and that the two games share only minor lore references.
However, in the Pillars of Eternity subreddit, players have noted some interesting connections. In the castle shown in the opening shot, a flag resembling the symbol of Woedica, the god of justice and law who also goes by the name "Oathbinder," is displayed. This is the same name as the sword featured in the trailer, and the runes inscribed on the sword are in Aediran, the language of Eora's largest empire, where Woedica was primarily worshipped.Woedica plays a sort of indirect antagonist role for the player in both Pillars of Eternity and its sequel
It plays a role like an indirect antagonist for the player in both Pillars of Eternity and its sequels.
From this information, one of the major rumors is that Avowed is a prequel to Pillars of Eternity and is set in the Aedyr Empire. This makes a lot of sense, considering the banner shown in the trailer and the Oathbinder's sword inscribed with Aedyran runes; by the time Pillars of Eternity begins, Woedica is in exile, and Avowed could depict her fall from power, may also explain the ominous monologue in the trailer about the "forsaken oath."
It's amazing what an hour of watching wikis can reveal.
