Disintegration, a FPS and RTS hybrid with hoverbikes, will be free to play this weekend.

"Disintegration" came to our attention last year because its developer, V1 Interactive, was founded by former "Halo" creative director Marcus Lett and former "SOCOM" director Mike Gutman. Despite its pedigree, the game has had a tough start: according to Steam Charts, it has had only 123 players at its peak since launching in mid-June, with an average of 10 players over the past 30 days.

To be fair, it's hard to encourage people to commit to a multiplayer-focused game when you don't have the infrastructure to attract players in the first place, and V1 has done just that by making the full game, including the single-player campaign and multiplayer, available for free over the weekend. V1 hopes to turn that around by offering free weekends for the full game, which includes both a single-player campaign and multiplayer.

The big question is whether the free weekend campaign will make enough of an impression to lead to a sustained rise in numbers. While pre-release impressions were not great, according to V1, the game has been significantly updated since launch, with improved UI and visual effects, better matchmaking and party management, and changes to the Gravcycles (gun-toting sci-fi bikes that players ride and blast around on) that have made them "faster and more responsive is now better."

Disintegration's free weekend begins July 30 at 10 am PT/1 pm ET and runs through the same time on August 3. During the free weekend, the game will be available at 40% off the regular price of $50/£40/€50. More information is available at disintegrationgame.com.
