Director Hideo Kojima and manga artist Junji Ito are keen to produce a horror game (updated)

Update: Manga artist Junji Ito exaggerated Director Hideo Kojima's offer of collaboration in a recent interview. He initially told Comic Book through a translator that Kojima had invited the manga artist to join him in a horror game he might design, but now claims it was only a remark made at a party.

Ito never claimed that Kojima Productions was developing a horror game, nor did he say that there was an official agreement. However, the interview has sparked much speculation, and some fans may have read a little too much into it. However, that does not mean that a collaboration will not happen, so stay tuned.

Original Story Ever since Konami killed off Kojima Productions' "Silent Hill" and left only the playable teaser "PT," people have been waiting for director Hideo Kojima to return to horror. That anticipation has been stirred by director Hideo Kojima himself, but what the studio's next film will be remains to be seen. However, according to manga artist Junji Ito, a horror game is in the works.

Speaking to Comic Book, Tomie's creator said that the designer has been talking with Kojima about cooperating on a horror game that "might be done," but did not give any details about the game itself.

"I'm acquainted with Director Kojima, and we have talked about the possibility of him doing a horror-based game," Ito told Comic Book through an interpreter.

When the topic came up in interviews, Kojima always seemed eager to get into horror again, and last year he tweeted about part of the process of making a horror game. He has also expressed a desire to work on smaller games, comics, and films.

Since this project is still just an idea Kojima is pitching, it is unlikely that there will be an official announcement anytime soon, if ever. A photo of his desk with a BB from Death Stranding has sparked speculation that the studio's next project will be a sequel to Death Stranding. Kojima said that he and art director Yoji Shinkawa were working at home, discussing characters, the world, and other ideas, but other than that, the project remains a mystery.

In the meantime, we finally got to play "Death Stranding" on PC. It's mostly about roaming around the impressive Icelandic wilderness, but it still has a fair amount of horror elements, and it's quite nerve-wracking to go under the BT zone - at least until you've done it 1,000 times. It's not a full-blown horror game, but it's probably the closest thing to Kojima's work for a while.
