By their very nature, laptops are designed to be opened and closed over and over again. But if you open and close the lid too many times under certain circumstances, you might crash due to a strange new bug in Windows 10.

Exactly how many times will it crash? Microsoft does not say explicitly, only explaining that "repeatedly opening and closing the lid in Windows 10" may cause the Desktop Windows Manager (DWM.exe) process to stop responding. Good to know. I agree.

Fortunately, there are only two scenarios in which this could occur, and both involve 4K resolution. In the first scenario, the bug appears when you connect an external monitor via HDMI, set it to run at 4K, and load a 4K H264 video in the "Movies and TV" app. Repeatedly closing and opening the lid during video playback may result in a crash.

While this is unlikely to be a problem for most people, if you are watching an R-rated movie and a junior passes by repeatedly, you may find yourself closing and opening your laptop repeatedly.

Neither of these are related to a hardware problem, i.e., the laptop should not be returned. Instead, Microsoft states that the problem is an issue with the DirectX video memory management (Dxgmm2.sys) component.

Microsoft is working on a fix, but has not indicated when it will be ready. My guess is that it will be included in the next Patch Tuesday update that will be distributed to PCs on August 10 (the second Tuesday in August).
