I like "MechWarrior 5," but what if it were an RTS? As much as the long forgotten MechCommander series. "Mechcommander Mercenaries" is a mod for "MechWarrior 5" that turns the game into a kind of RTS. A kind of ...... but it's pretty much fully functional.

The mod, called Mechcommander Mercenaries Modders, posted on Nexus Mods, uses a movable camera and top-down view to give orders to the lance mechs. You can order them to move, destroy terrain, attack, use jump jets, escort allies, etc. They can also follow specific units with the camera. The developer says this is a beta release and there are a fair amount of bugs, but I'm impressed with how well it's done. Definitely something to follow.

Here's the current description: "Through MechWarrior 5's campaign mode, you select and command lances and other allied units. Phase 1 of the project is a limited RTS experience that works with most of the base game's story missions and procedurally generated levels. Additional RTS features, past Mech Commander title functionality, instant action and co-op compatibility will be added later.

Oh, and here's a great feature they're working on: hot swapping between FPS and RTS modes. They show it off in this video, but it is not yet functioning properly.
