Asus' promising IPS gaming monitors meet all requirements

Asus is launching several 27" gaming monitors with IPS screens and a reasonably fast refresh rate. That is the TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A.

B&H Photo is taking pre-orders for $479. It's not cheap, but it probably combines a high-quality IPS panel (IPS screens usually are), 2560x1440 resolution, and an overclocked 170Hz refresh rate (native is 144Hz) to keep the action smooth. In addition, the response time is 1 ms MPRT.

In other words, the adaptive synchronization feature is almost GPU-independent, allowing refresh rates to be synchronized with either AMD Radeon or Nvidia GeForce graphics cards.

The only bullet point we don't find so compelling is HDR support; it can display HDR visuals and is DisplayHDR 400 certified, but with a peak brightness of 400 nits, we doubt it can properly display HDR content.

Another monitor that shows promise is the TUF Gaming VG279QL1A. This is another 27-inch display with an IPS screen, but it has a resolution of 1920x1080, a rather slow refresh rate (165 Hz), and a low maximum brightness (250 nits).

It is built for fast action gameplay without relying on a lower quality TN panel like its 1440p sibling. Therefore, theoretically, it should provide smooth visuals and above-average picture quality, but neither model has been tested.

It will be interesting to see what the price of this product will be (no pre-orders yet); looking at Newegg, the Gigabyte G27F sells for $250 with similar specifications (27", 1080p, 144Hz, 1ms MPRT, IPS). The VG279QL1A is faster at 165Hz, but would be difficult to sell if the pricing is too high compared to the G27F.
