'The Fall Guys' Released, but Servers Take a Hit

Fall Guys is having a very good launch day, at least in terms of player numbers. After a very well-received beta, this is probably not too surprising, but developer Mediatonic may have underestimated how many people wanted to be clumsy beans.

Earlier today, the Fall Guys Twitter account reported that 120,000 people were playing the game simultaneously, most of them on PS4 since PS Plus subscribers can play, but a quick glance at SteamDB shows that many are also playing on PC, At its peak, more than 50,000 people were playing it. It is also today's top seller.

Its popularity has unfortunately caused some technical problems. Players have reported problems with dropped connections and lost rewards, and Mediatonic is aware of this and is currently "beefing up" its servers. The initial estimate was 30 minutes, but it is taking a little longer. However, the team has been very cooperative and despite the server problems, people seem to be enjoying the chaotic and obstacle-filled battle royal races.

I'm going to get stuck in myself tonight when Phil unties me from the news desk and expect to get quite a few nasty anecdotes, like Chris's unfortunate, but also very lucky, brush with the fans:

"We started at a bad race level and for a moment the group lead, but the pack of players caught up to me," he said in a Fall Guys preview.

"I fell off my face before going straight into a spinning fan trap. But the blades of the fan hit me into another player and I bounced off the blades. Then I was immediately knocked down by the next fan trap. Each trap could have easily knocked me backwards down the track, but it was all luck. After a few rebounds, I was pushed to the front of the race along with another unlucky (but actually lucky) racer, leaving the others far behind.

Stay tuned to Twitter for updates.
