Obsidian is working on something that is neither Avowed nor Grounded.

Obsidian, now under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, has been quite busy. It just launched the Early Access version of the spider-filled survival game "Grounded," and just last month released the first-person RPG "Avowed," albeit in movie form; "The Outer Worlds" is also due to get some major DLC next month; and "The Outer Worlds" has been in the works for a couple of months now, with the first-person RPG "The Outer Worlds" due to get some major DLC in the next month. And now it turns out that at least one more project is in the works.

Josh Sawyer, the studio design director who led the development of the two "Fallout: New Vegas" and "Pillars of Eternity" games, recently posted a description of his role on his Tumblr. In that post, he wrote about meeting with design directors, providing feedback, and performing many administrative tasks, but nothing about working on his own games.

In response to this post, some expressed sadness that Sawyer is not directing his own projects (cheers, ResetEra), but he clarified that he is indeed directing them.

What a tease: we don't know much about Avowed, except that it is a first-person fantasy RPG set in the world of Pillars of Eternity, but his experience with the series and the fact that he is already leading the design of a well-known first-person RPG I would have thought Sawyer a safe bet as game director, both because of his experience with the series and the fact that he has already led the design of a well-known first-person RPG.

Nevertheless, another RPG is also a strong possibility: while Obsidian has moved into co-op survival games with "Grounded," Sawyer has spent the past 20 years designing RPGs.

It probably won't be "Pillars of Eternity 3," Sawyer said; Pillars 2 didn't sell well and Obsidian will probably have to "rethink the whole format of the game." This is probably why "Avowed" is being released instead of another isometric entertainment that follows directly from "Pillars 2."
