Asus is in the race to ship its first gaming monitor with HDMI 2.1.
[HDMI 2.1 is the most sophisticated new version of the HDMI standard, with more bandwidth and useful gaming-specific features. But it is not only gaming consoles that will benefit, but PC gaming as well. So it is no surprise that Asus, through its Republic of Gamers division, has several new HDMI 2.1 monitors available.

The largest is a 43-inch model. Some might call this a modest TV, but it is still technically a monitor since it does not have a built-in tuner. In any case, the big selling point is the HDMI 2.1 connection. Specifically, Asus is also preparing 32- and 27-inch models with HDMI 2.1 ports.

What are the key features of HDMI 2.1, a standard that increases bandwidth from HDMI 2.0/2.0b's 18 Gbps to 48 Gbps, although our friends at Tom's Hardware have put together a great guide on how it compares to DisplayPort, In short, it paves the way to drive uncompressed 4K games at up to 144Hz via HDMI, whereas HDMI 2.0/2.0b had a maximum of 60Hz.

Another benefit of HDMI 2.1 is the introduction of an automatic low-latency mode. This essentially prioritizes low latency over image optimization and is often referred to as "game mode" on TVs. The difference here is that HDMI 2.1 allows the display to automatically adjust its settings depending on the content.

"Low latency settings may not be ideal for other types of viewing, as the TV's processing capabilities may be shut down to reduce latency. Therefore, in automatic low-latency mode, if the source no longer requires this mode, for example if you switch to a movie stream, the source will disable the signal and the display will revert to its previous mode for an optimal picture," the HDMI Forum explains.

Asus appears to limit the refresh rate of the new monitors to 120 Hz, but that is not entirely clear. Also, other than HDMI 2.1 support, Asus has yet to provide any other specification details on the upcoming displays.

The new monitors are expected to be available this holiday season, coinciding with the arrival of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. By then, new graphics from AMD (Big Navi) and Nvidia (Ampere) will probably be available as well.

Meanwhile, Eve is also preparing the HDMI 2.1 "Spectrum" monitors we wrote about a few months ago; two of the three models will be available by the end of the year as well.
