General
The first "Quake" is free at QuakeCon, and "Quake 2" may be free as well.

Remember when QuakeCon was about Quake? It was in the mid 90's and a bunch of guys brought their PCs to a hotel in Texas, built a LAN, and spent the weekend blowing each other up. Ido Software was not involved, they just heard the rumors and showed up on the last day to see what the heck was going on.

We've come a long way since then, but this year's QuakeCon at Home event will give us a little taste of those good old days by simply logging in with the Bethesda launcher running. Once logged in, the original Quake will be added to your launcher library for free.

If the game does not appear in the library, log out and log back in and it should appear. (The drive space consumed during installation is delightfully small at 54MB (Warzone's 200GB is a bit more painful by contrast) and takes only a few seconds with a decent Internet connection. It works like a charm, but requires a bit of fiddling with the controls if you want to play with a standard WASD setup. Mouse look must also be enabled manually: type "+mlook" in the console.

This may not be the only old-fashioned Quake giveaway going on during QuakeCon; Bethesda is also sponsoring a number of other organizations, including Direct Relief, UNICEF, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, The Trevor Project, and the Dallas Pets and Four Paws animal charities, and if donations during the event exceed $10,000, the amazing Quake 2 will also be free.

QuakeCon at Home runs through August 9 at 10 pm ET. Click here for the full schedule.
