LG has no plans to update its 2019 OLED TVs to support FreeSync

Owners of LG's 2019 OLED TVs had hoped that a software update would add FreeSync support to their displays, as was recently done with the company's 2020 CX and GX models. Unfortunately, that will not happen.

"At this time, there are no plans to support this feature on 2019 models," LG confirmed in a statement to Forbes.

FreeSync is AMD's approach to adaptive sync, which dynamically synchronizes refresh rates between compatible displays and graphics cards. This results in a smoother gaming experience by eliminating screen tearing, a type of visual artifact that can occur when the refresh rates between GPU and display are not perfectly synchronized.

LG's decision to leave 2019 OLED models withering with respect to FreeSync support is mildly surprising given how much attention the company has paid to gaming. However, the company's 2019 model remains one of the best gaming TVs available.

FreeSync support is not tied to last year's lineup, but these models still support Nvidia's similar G-Sync technology. They also offer native 120 Hz refresh rates and, importantly, are equipped with the latest HDMI 2.1 standard.

HDMI 2.1 offers several nifty features for gaming, including built-in support for variable refresh rates. So even though LG's 2019 TVs do not support FreeSync, they can still benefit from next-generation graphics cards (which are expected to support HDMI 2.1), the Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. These consoles will also support FreeSync, but we imagine the experience will be similar either way.

Another notable benefit of HDMI 2.1 is a feature called Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM). As the name implies, this automatically turns on the display's so-called "game mode" when gaming, prioritizing low latency over visual optimization.

All of the above doesn't necessarily mean you need to cross the 2019 LG OLED TVs off your wish list, especially as Black Friday and Cyber Monday approach, as attractive deals may be available.
