"Goldeneye 25," the long-awaited remake of "Goldeneye" fans, has been suspended by IP holder MGM/Danjaq. The developers announced the news on Twitter, stating that in response they will remove the Bond theme and rebrand the game as Project Ianus, a "90s classic-inspired" FPS.
"It is with sadness that we inform you that we have been asked to discontinue development of Goldeneye 25, courtesy of the IP holder (MGM/Danjaq). This possibility has always been in the back of our minds, but we have done our best. [We can't make a Bond game, but we can make a great game with all the lovable aspects of 90's action shooters.
The mission statement for GoldenEye 25 was to remake the single player campaign of GoldenEye 64 in the Unreal Engine and complete it in time for the 25th anniversary in August 2022. All of the assets for the remake were created from scratch, so perhaps some can be carried over to the new iteration of the project, which already has its own Twitter account. The team has also released some early screenshots of Project Ianus.
"You must be wondering what happened," the developers tweeted earlier today. 'We can't allow them to continue using the name GoldenEye or the James Bond character. We will take over what we have created and make an original game. It's a shame, but at least now we can distribute it on Steam and there is a possibility of a console port."
In September, the team released a video showcasing the silo level of GoldenEye 64. Here is a glimpse of the possibilities.
