Nvidia's September 1 GeForce special event heralds a "new era" of amped GPUs, but will it really be the GeForce RTX 3080?

The Green Team is sure to usher in a "new era" of Nvidia Ampere-based cards at the GeForce Special Event, which kicks off this September 1 at 9:00 AM PT. And not August 31, as yesterday's announcement of 21 days suggested. The event will feature a speech by Nvidia's leather-clad CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang.

"During the event, CEO Huang will showcase the company's latest innovations in gaming and graphics," we are told.

So either this is a reveal of the new Nvidia Ampere or we are being trolled by some games being added to GeForce NOW. Once again, the countdown site reminds us of the happy days of 1999, when the company launched the GeForce 256, which it calls "the world's first GPU." And it actually launched the entire GeForce brand.

The event page says: "21 days. 21 years. Join us as we celebrate the biggest breakthrough in PC gaming since 1999 before we enter the future. And what comes next."

Nvidia's social media accounts are currently in nostalgia overdrive, posting favorite memories from the past 21 years "as a tribute to PC gaming," featuring each new year in turn, until 2019 on August 31 We're in for it, and on September 1, Nvidia will usher in "a new era."

I'm willing to wager now that We are not going to see the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. We are going to see something with a completely different name (which will essentially be what we have all been speculating will be the RTX 3080). After all, the GeForce 256 graphics card ushered in the GeForce era, so maybe Ampere is about to usher in something else.

However, it seems unlikely that Nvidia will abandon its brand name, given that it is called a GeForce Special Event...

Whatever the outcome, you can watch the event live on September 1, 2020 at 9:00 AM Pacific Standard Time, 5:00 PM UK time.
