Blizzard Confirms "Major Tweaks" to Hearthstone Rewards Following Speculation on Battle Pass

Update: While the term "Battle Pass" was never actually used, Hearthstone game director Ben Lee confirmed in a Reddit AMA today that a "major overhaul of the rewards and progression system" is underway.

"One of the goals of this new system is to allow you to play Hearthstone your way, so you are no longer locked into only playing Standard or Wild for the majority of the game's financial rewards.

"We also plan to repackage (without reducing) the current rewards earned in Hearthstone and present that information to you in an easy to read and understand format. We want you to know how many rewards you have earned, how many more you can earn, and the steps required to earn them. In addition, we are adding a number of exciting cosmetic rewards that players will receive with each expansion."

Lee noted that the recent Ashes of Outland expansion brought significant changes to Hearthstone, including "no duplicate" rules, free competitive decks for players, and increased ranked rewards. He also emphasized that Blizzard will take the same approach to restructuring rewards and progressions,

maintaining "the value that players can earn in the game" and the "flexibility" of the current system.

He also dismissed concerns that players would have to spend an inordinate amount of time in the game to earn all the rewards in the new system, stating that Blizzard wants "players who love Hearthstone, but also have other responsibilities and interests, to be able to complete reward track levels He stated that he wanted to.

"We want players to feel comfortable participating in this new experiment in rewards and progression without feeling like they don't have time or have to sacrifice their lives for it," Lee said.

According to Lee, the new rewards and progression system, as well as "other things we've been working on," will be revealed at the Year of the Phoenix interim check-in, when the public process for Hearthstone's next expansion begins.

Original story

Blizzard is considering introducing Battle Pass to Hearthstone; as reported by CCG site Out of Cards, players recently received a survey from Blizzard, offering daily challenges and win-based They were asked about their interest in a system that would replace rewards based on daily challenges and wins with rewards based on experience.

According to the survey, the Battle Pass, like most Battle Passes, has both free and paid courses and takes players approximately four months to complete them all. Rewards offered include new and existing expansion packs, hero skins, experience boosters, arena tickets, card backs, gold, and random individual cards.

According to Out of Cards, Hearthstone players on the free course who achieve all 100 levels of the pass will get the following:

Paid course players will also get:

Players who have reached level 100 will earn 25 gold per level, up to a level cap of 150. Of course, these rewards will likely vary depending on the battle pass.

Battle Pass has been all the rage lately, and regardless of what you think of Battle Pass (and some people like Battle Pass), adding Battle Pass to Hearthstone, a free-to-play card game that has been around since 2014, seems like a very natural evolution. Blizzard, however, would not comment on the possibility of the pass, or this investigation. [A Blizzard spokesperson said, "We regularly ask our players for input on various ideas for Hearthstone. We have nothing to announce at this time."

More details may emerge later today: the Hearthstone team is participating in an ongoing AMA on Reddit.
