Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" Remastered; "Mute Grab" Renamed in Tribute to Creator

"Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1" and "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2" have been remastered and will be available in a bundle version with HD graphics, "upgraded" Create-A-Park and Create-A-Skater tools, custom park sharing, and local and online multiplayer modes will be added to the bundled version, which will be available this September. But the biggest change will be something totally unexpected and completely different: The "Mute Grub" will be renamed.

"Around 1981, Chris Weddle, a deaf skater and Colton Skatepark local, was a prominent amateur on the competition circuit," Hawk explains. "The 'Indy' air had just been created and named, and someone suggested that a fronthand grab should be called a 'tracker' air. Others countered that since Chris was the first to do it, it should be named after him.

Weddle seems to have been known around the Park as "the quiet, silent man: the mute Air." Recently, however, people, including Hawk himself, reconsidered and contacted Weddle about the trick and his name.

"He responded very politely," Hawk wrote, "but being deaf but not speechless, it was clear that a different name would have honored his heritage. When I asked him last year as I was diving into the origins of the trick, he said that if he had a choice, he would have preferred to be named "Deaf" or "Weddle" Grubb. His exact words were "I am deaf and not mute."

And in the THPS remaster, the mute grab was renamed Weddle grab. Hawk writes, "It will be hard to break the habit of saying the old name, but I think Chris deserves the credit."

The remastered version also gives new names to two tricks, Weddleback Flip and Reach Around Invert. These tricks were created by Chris Weddle, a skater with hearing loss and a pioneer of all three tricks. With the release of the remaster, Vicarious Visions is renaming them to honor Chris' legacy and hope that fans will enjoy these tricks and dozens more in this demo and the full game."

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 will be available on the Epic Games Store on September 4.
