Windows 10 has new settings for power users with multiple GPUs.

General
Windows 10 has new settings for power users with multiple GPUs.

While it is not recommended these days to run multiple GPUs in SLI (Nvidia) or Crossfire (AMD), a quasi-new feature in Windows 10 is interesting for those who still run them in SLI or Crossfire. It is a graphics setting that allows users to manually configure which GPU to use for high-performance workloads.

Microsoft says this is not technically an entirely new feature, but is an important change implemented based on customer feedback.

Those running the latest Windows 10 test build (20190) can head to Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings or Settings > Games > Graphics Settings to set the GPU as the default high-performance GPU by It can be labeled.

"If you are a power user with multiple high performance GPUs and want to specify which GPU to use for high performance use cases, you can now do so... What this means is that applications that require a high-performance GPU will by default use the high-performance GPU specified on this page," Microsoft explains.

Microsoft has also updated the graphics settings box to allow users to choose which GPU to run certain applications on, rather than letting Windows choose for them. While not exactly a game changer, this may be helpful if you are using multiple GPUs and one of them tends to run hotter than the others.

You may also be able to pull a little extra performance out of this method. For example, if one card runs cooler, it is more likely to maintain boost clock for a longer period of time; this is good for GPUs used for certain games or other applications that do not benefit from SLI or Crossfire.

This feature will eventually be rolled out to all Windows 10 users. If you want access now, you will need to become a Windows Insider and install build 20190.
