Counter-Strike Pro Reforms Work-Life Balance Rankings

The Counter-Strike Professional Players' Association (CSPPA) has announced a ranking system to promote its larger goal of improving the condition of its member esports professionals. The more transparent ranking is an attempt to ensure that players do not have to sacrifice their health to be a professional.

"The current ranking system encourages players to play as many matches and tournaments as possible and often fails to provide reasonable protection for players and teams in case a player is unable to participate in a match or tournament due to health or burnout issues," the official release stated. The new CSPPA rankings include ranking protections in case a player is unable to participate in a tournament due to illness or injury.

The new rankings have other key differences from the current system. For example, the rankings are completely transparent and everyone will know how they were determined. Changes to the rules will be managed by a committee made up of CSPPA players. The rules also limit the number of tournaments that can take place over a period as long as nine months, and exclude matches and tournaments that coincide with a typical player's rest period.

The final results of the new rankings are not in line with other ranking systems or fan expectations; as reported by The Loadout, the CSPPA rankings differ from the ESL and HLTV rankings. On social media, some fans disagree with the results of the new rankings, and reactions to the CSPPA's announcement range from ridicule and comparisons to other rankings to quips about the exact rules required to rank teams.

The CSPPA, for its part, stated on its announcement and rankings page that this is the first edition of the rankings. It further stated that it is open to feedback from "all members of the CS:GO ecosystem, including fans."

On the CSPPA rankings site, one can view the rankings, view parts of the process, and submit feedback.
