RAM and SSD upgrades may be more affordable than usual.

The best time to upgrade your PC is approaching. Of course, we are talking about the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales season. This year's holiday sales season is shaping up to be the most attractive yet, in part due to the oversupply of NAND flash memory, which could drive prices of certain products even lower than usual.

According to DRAMeXchange, there has been a general decline in supplier pricing in the NAND flash memory market, which is expected to continue through the fourth quarter.

"Despite the traditional busy season for electronics sales and the release of Apple's new iPhone in 3Q20, a 10% quarterly decline in NAND flash ASP (average selling price) due to excessive pandemic-affected client-end inventory likely," said DRAMeXchange.

"Furthermore, as suppliers continue to improve yields of 128L NAND flash, the oversupply in the NAND flash market will intensify in 4Q20, further exacerbating the decline in NAND flash ASPs," DRAMeXchange added.

According to the market research firm, the decline could reach as much as 15%. Generally speaking, as component costs fall, so do the prices of consumer products that use them. In other words, if things go as DRAMeXchange predicts, there is a very good chance that SSDs and RAM will drop in price in the coming months.

To stop the bleeding, NAND flash memory makers have reduced supply in the wafer market over the past few months. However, the impact on prices has been limited as module makers have struggled to clear out their inventories due to the spending impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

"As excess inventory levels carried over into this quarter, contract prices inevitably began to fall," said DRAMeXchange.

The impact has already been seen to some extent, with Newegg selling a number of 1TB-class SSDs well below the $100 mark, including Adata's SU630 960GB for $84.99 and Team Group's 1TB GX2 for $89.99; Western Digital's 1TB Blue SN550 is currently $104.99, as is XPG's 1TB SX6000 Pro.

As always, when the bargain season arrives, we will highlight the best deals and let you know about any notable sales going on between now and that time.
