FYI: If you "preload" Microsoft Flight Simulator, it is just a client.

If you were expecting to download the Microsoft Flight Simulator preload and dive into the game as soon as it launches, well, sit down. The preload downloads only the game's client, which weighs in at a suspiciously small 532.5 MB. Once the client is downloaded, a 91 GB download awaits.

Of course, if you purchased this game on Steam, you were not given the option to preload, so add the client size to the launch download; if you purchased it on the Microsoft store and preloaded, the download was a) very fast and b) very You may have been observant enough to notice that it was small. If so, well done.

But there is something else troubling besides the download size (which I certainly expected): while downloading the 91 GB of "recommended content," an endlessly looping soundtrack plays, presumably to set the mood. However, this mood-setting is likely to irritate rather than inspire, especially if you live in Australia, where the Internet is notoriously rickety.

If the music bothers you (and it will), right-click on the speakers in the system tray and open the volume mixer. Then mute the installer.

Download speeds naturally vary, but Tyler says he downloaded 31 GB in about 30 minutes. At any rate, 91 GB is a lot of download, but still more modest than "Call of Duty."

A review of Microsoft Flight Simulator is in progress, but it will be worth the wait.
