Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer and legacy Edge in 2021.

Microsoft has announced that support for Internet Explorer 11 will end on August 17, 2021. At that point, all Microsoft-owned products that may still use Internet Explorer, such as Outlook, OneDrive, and Office 365, will end support for the browser. Meanwhile, the legacy edition of Microsoft Edge will end on March 9, 2021.

Since its release for PCs in July 2015 and after its reworking as a Chromium-based browser in 2019, Microsoft Edge has been hailed as a great alternative to Internet Explorer, but individual users have already been using it for years have an Internet Explorer alternative, not many seem to actually use it.

The browser's overall market share is low, outpacing even Firefox and some older versions of Chrome, the most frequently used browser overall. More recently, in June 2020, Windows 7, 8.1, and Windows 10 updates will automatically install Edge and import user data from other browsers before asking permission.

Those actually still using Internet Explorer are enterprise customers whose digital infrastructure depends on this browser. These customers can use Internet Explorer legacy mode within Microsoft Edge to access pages built for IE11.
