Epic Announces #FreeFortnite Tournament and Evil Apple Peelings

As PC Gamer's Fortnite guy, I've written many guides to Epic's various tournaments, cash cups, and special events, but none as strange as this one. On Thursday evening, Epic announced the #FreeFortnite Cup. This new tournament is supposed to continue Epic's campaign against Apple and Google. Barring a legal miracle, this will be the last chance to cross play with friends on iOS and Android devices.

"All friends. Great prizes. And one bad apple," writes Epic.

What's the prize? Well, that's where it gets a little ...... It gets ridiculous.

Participants who score 10 or more points during the tournament (details to follow) will win a "Tart Tycoon" skin. You'll recognize him as the apple man in Epic's parody of Apple's famous 1984 ad, which was talked about last week. Here it is in all its subtle glory.

Play a few games during the tournament and you're sure to win this skin.

Epic could have ended it there, but they didn't. For some reason, they are giving away #FreeFortnite hats to the top 20,000 players. It's a hat for dad. It's a hat with Fortnite llamas colored like Apple's old rainbow logo.

God have mercy.

Epic will also give 1,200 players (terms to be determined) free gaming gear, including Alienware gaming laptops, Samsung Galaxy Tabs, and old-school gaming consoles. Whether this will stop millions of mobile players from calling customer support remains to be seen, but it would be a start.

In any case, Epic is clearly going all out in its campaign against Apple and Google. Whether they can win over the tech giants in court remains to be seen, but it is clear that Epic is invested in the court of public opinion.

The "Free Fortnite Cup" will begin at an undetermined time on August 23, presumably accessible through the "Compete" tab on the main menu; Epic says the event will run for four hours. Despite the announcement's emphasis on cross-play with mobile friends, the competition is apparently for solo players and is limited to 12 matches. Here are the details.

The breakdown of points looks like this:

So, will you play in the Free Fortnite Cup or will you simply pass? Thankfully, we PC players will be coasting and playing Fortnite Season 4 no matter what happens.
