Unlike "Suicide Squad," "Gotham Knights" is not set in the world of Arkham.

Over the weekend, after a year of previews, Gotham Nights was released for the first time. Gotham Knights takes place after the caped crusader is apparently dead, and Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood try to save the city from the Court of Owls. It is not, however, a sequel to the Arkham series.

That is not particularly clear from the trailer or gameplay cutouts. Arkham Knight ends up setting up this very scenario, in which the Bat-Family must intervene and protect Gotham in Batman's absence. WB Games, however, confirmed that Gotham Nights is set in a different, albeit related, continuity.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of similarities; WB Montreal also produced Arkham Origins, and from the Batgirl section of the gameplay walkthrough, it appears that she plays much like Arkham's Batman.

The Arkham series has instead been taken over by Suicide Squad: Take down the Justice League! continues the Arkham series, even though it appears to have less tangible connection to the universe than "Gotham Knights". The film's trailer shows gangsters such as Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark hanging out in Metropolis.

Aside from Harley and Deadshot (who has been redesigned) appearing in Arkham Games, it is unclear what other connections they have or if they are really important beyond branding. Tone-wise, they seem lighter and more slapstick, and instead of sneaking around in the shadows and scaring goons, they're jetpack-hopping, cannon-wielding sharks that cause carnage.

Gotham Knights is scheduled for release next year, while Suicide Squad will have to wait until 2022.
