When the Star Wars: Journey to Battoo Game Pack for The Sims 4 was announced earlier today, it looked like an extremely safe and lucrative way for Electronic Arts to make the most of its "Star Wars" game license. Star Wars is already completely inescapable, so why not bring lightsabers and stormtroopers to The Sims 4? Why not? Why not? Star Wars is everywhere. Star Wars is everywhere, and so is Star Wars Grape.
But many "The Sims 4" players are not particularly happy with the expansion; a cursory perusal of the relevant hashtags on Twitter and spending just one second on the game's subreddit will provide ample evidence.
Here are a few tweets that garnered support:
YouTube's upvote/downvote system, on the other hand, voted 43,000 against and 22,000 for the trailer. The most upvoted comment claimed, "No one wants this, not even the majority of loyal Star Wars fans."
Journey to Batuu is a game pack, so unlike The Sims 4 expansion, it is a fairly self-contained experience. In other words, you are free to take it or leave it, and I can totally sympathize with those who want to leave it: is The Sims 4 role-playing par excellence, and who wants a carefully managed simulation with the stamp of a punishingly ubiquitous media franchise? ? (Even Baby Yoda, who has been in the game for a while now, take it or leave it, it's up to you.) For example, it makes sense to have a Marvel superhero in Fortnite. Because if Fortnite didn't opportunistically merge with other media phenomena, it would lose its identity. The Sims 4, however, is different.
The Sims 4 community is vocal and, broadly speaking, Star Wars is not high on the priority list. In this Digital Spy user survey, "Star Wars" came in at the bottom of the list of wants (below "zombies," "climate change," and "werewolves"). Meanwhile, Maxis responded to ongoing requests for more subtle skin tone options earlier this month, but came under intense fan pressure in the form of a Change.org petition.
In any case, while many people like Star Wars, many do not want Star Wars in The Sims 4. For those who are fed up with the billion-dollar film series based on Star Wars, this blowback must be cathartic.
