AMD's latest GPU driver aims to significantly improve Fortnite performance

In conjunction with Fortnite's Season 4 update, AMD has released new GPU drivers optimized to improve the game's performance. And that's not just a few.

According to the release notes, the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.8.3 driver package improves performance on PCs with Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics cards by 12%. This is also an average value, not a peak specification.

This claim is based on running Fortnite with DirectX 12 and Epic graphics settings. It is also based on AMD's own internal testing using a PC with a Ryzen 7 3800XT processor and 16GB of DDR4-3200. Not to be overlooked, AMD in the past has often made performance claims based on tests performed on Intel CPUs. But this time it is different. [20.8.3 driver package has been optimized for "Project Cars 3" (available now) and "Marvel's Avengers" (available September 4, September 1 for deluxe pre-orders) in addition to improving the frame rate of "Fortnite".

As for bug fixes, there are a few (though fewer than usual). They are:

Of the known issues that have not yet been fixed, the only black screen issue that is an AMD specific highlight is related to Enhanced Sync. If necessary, this can be disabled for a temporary workaround. Otherwise, AMD has stated that it continues to investigate complaints of black screens and system hangs "during prolonged gameplay."

The best thing you can do in this situation is to file a bug report, which can be done directly from the Radeon Software utility. Also, if the game is stuttering or freezing, you may want to turn off Windows 10 game mode.

You can apply the 20.8.3 driver release from the Radeon Software utility or install it manually from AMD's driver site.
