Nvidia graphics cards now account for 80% of the PC market

Nvidia has captured 80% of the discrete GPU market, according to Jon Peddie Research (via Videocardz) Nvidia has taken another 5% of the GPU market from AMD since the beginning of 2020, and as it heads into the next GPU generation, it will take an overall 80% share of the market.

AMD's Radeon sales are not declining, but Nvidia is outpacing them in discrete GPU sales, the report says; both Nvidia and AMD are selling more GPUs quarter-over-quarter in 2020: AMD is up 8.4% for the summer GPUs shipped, while Nvidia shipped 17.8% more during the same period.

The overall PC market reportedly increased by just 0.68% in the first three months of 2020, but even that modest increase represents a 12.54% increase over 2019.

Typically, the second quarter is not a transaction peak for PC upgrades. This year, no doubt, the global pandemic has many users considering upgrades during the telecommuting period.

For many users looking to upgrade their machines, the end of September will see the arrival of at least Nvidia's Ampere generation of RTX 30 series graphics cards, perhaps led by the RTX 3090. So in terms of gaming demand, the Q3 numbers may be a bit low.

We will hear more about Nvidia Ampere at the GeForce special event on September 1, 2020.

AMD RDNA 2 graphics cards are also expected to be announced towards the end of the year,

shortly after Nvidia's announcement and around the time of the launch of the RDNA 2-powered game consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. [14] [15] The AMD RDNA 2 graphics cards are expected to be released in the second half of the year.
