Intel Dramatically Increases GPU Clock Speeds with 1.65GHz Xe Chip

Intel Xe integrated GPUs have been spotted running at GPU clock speeds of 1.65 GHz, and if shipping products can maintain this speed, it would certainly be a major accomplishment for Intel's graphics chip development.

Since Skylake, Intel's maximum boost clocks for graphics chips have remained around 1 to 1.2 GHz, and mobile chips tend to be at the lower end of that range. However, integrated GPUs built on the Intel Xe graphics architecture seem to be breaking through the previous clock speed barrier in one fell swoop. [The 1.65GHz chip was spotted on the SiSoft Sandra database by TUM_APISAK, the same leaker who last week spotted an Intel Tiger Lake Core i7 1185G7 chip running at 1.55GHz.

The latest leaked information is reported to be 100 MHz faster, with a TDP of 28 W and a possible overclock of 26%, with an original clock speed of a little over 1,300 MHz.

This could be the next-generation analog of the Core i7 1065NG7, the 28W Ice Lake processor found only in Apple's MacBook products. While there is no confirmation of the exact chip, this leak could possibly be related to Intel's DG1 low-power discrete desktop graphics card or an unknown configuration, but this seems unlikely at this time. The clock speeds are certainly in line with what one would expect from a desktop GPU.

The chip has 768 ALUs in 96 Execution Units (or Compute Units as specified in the SiSoft database), which is broadly related to both the top-of-the-line Tiger Lake iGPU and Intel's discrete DG1 card

It is not surprising, however, that Intel has managed to turn up the heat with Tiger Lake. Intel's 10nm SuperFin process is a newly optimized version of the existing 10nm process that promises many further optimizations to improve performance.

We won't have to wait long, at least until we get some answers about Intel's next generation machines, or until we see Intel Xe for the first time. Intel will be holding a Tiger Lake launch event tomorrow, September 2.

All of this could be great news for those looking to game on the go.
