The Witcher 3 celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. It still looks like it could have appeared today, but with some of the latest bells and whistles missing and a new generation of consoles on the way, it's time for an update.

A new edition is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, with visual and technical improvements such as ray tracing and reduced load times. This is a full version, and improvements will extend to DLC and expansions.

If you play The Witcher 3 on PC, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4, it will be offered as a free upgrade, but you will need the right hardware to take advantage of it; for PC, a GPU with ray tracing support and faster load times SSD to take advantage of the faster load times. Still, for those who already have a copy, it seems like a pretty good deal.

No release date was mentioned in the announcement, but lead PR manager Radek Grabowski said it will be available next year.

With The Witcher Season 2, The Witcher: Blood Origins The Witcher Season 2, The Witcher: Blood Origins, and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolves also coming up, it's a good time to be a fan of moody monster slaying.
