Doom is testing with a pregnancy test.

General
Doom is testing with a pregnancy test.

What truly unites us as a species is our collective desire to see "Doom" played on everything. The universe now exists only to create more and more platforms on which Doom can be played. And thanks to Foone Turing's tinkering with obscure software and hardware, we now know that pregnancy tests can play Doom. With a little tinkering, that is.

Over the weekend, Turing showed a GIF of Doom rendered on a pregnancy test display. Turing didn't actually play anything, it was just a video, but just one day later, Doom finally made the leap to a new platform and arguably changed the world forever.

The small black-and-white display meant that what you actually see is close to what Doom implies. There are walls, there are floors, there are doors ...... There are pixelated hallways. But when the imp actually gets close, it is unmistakable. Impressive.

Pregnancy tests are complicated. Previously, Turing dissected one and took apart what was found inside, including an 8-bit microcontroller comparable to those found in early PCs.

"It's probably faster than the CPUs used in the original IBM PCs for numerical calculations and basic I/O," Turing said. [The actual bit that tests whether you are pregnant or not is just a piece of paper, like an old pregnancy test. And then you throw it away. It's a disposable little computer.

"It's basically a scam," Turing said, echoing the sentiments of the tweet that prompted the deconstruction of the pregnancy test. As someone who doesn't have to pee on a stick to see if I'm pregnant, I hesitate to dismiss all digital kits as nonsense. For example, for the visually impaired, an LED display would be an improvement over a small line. An audio component would be even better, although it was not present in either test.

Dumping the computer after taking a leak seems rather wasteful.

The microcontroller can't really be used to run Doom by itself, since it can't be reprogrammed; Turing will be detailing how they got it to work soon. In an earlier thread, they said that after they managed to get the video working, they hope it will be tricky.
