Cyberpunk 2077" Microtransactions Limited to Multiplayer

Microtransactions are as ubiquitous as they are notorious, so it is not surprising that there is a lot of talk about this with regard to big games like Cyberpunk 2077. While it was previously assured that prospective players would not be included in the single player, recent comments at CD Projekt's earnings call have once again raised concerns.

During the call, co-CEO and president Adam Kiciński responded to an investor question about microtransactions by saying that the company does not intend to be aggressive, but that there are plans for monetization.

"We are never aggressive with our fans. We treat them fairly and we are friendly." Of course, we don't want to be aggressive, but expect great things to be purchased. The goal is to design monetization so that people are willing to spend money. I am not being sarcastic or hiding anything. The same goes for our single player games. We want to keep gamers happy while they spend money on our product. Of course microtransactions are expected, and CP is a great arena to sell things, but it's not offensive, it doesn't upset the gamer, it makes them happy - that's our goal at least."

Hearing all that, it sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 will have microtransactions, but the question Kiciński answered was specifically about multiplayer. We don't know much about Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer, and it won't appear until all the free DLC is released, but CD Projekt has long-term plans and has previously mentioned the role of microtransactions in them.

This week, the Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account said, "Nothing has changed. Single player is a one-time purchase, multiplayer is fueled by microtransactions.

It's quite reasonable to worry about microtransactions infiltrating a single-player game, as it's already happened, but for now, Cyberpunk 2077 will have plenty of post-launch support, 16 free DLC packs, two meaty premium expansions, and appears to offer similar value to The Witcher 3, which got a recently announced free next-gen upgrade.
