A New Dawn for Big Nav" AMD's Frank Azor Says the Sun Will Show Its Face Tomorrow

Nvidia's Ampere isn't the only GPU fruit on the horizon, as AMD's Big Navi graphics cards are expected to arrive soon, also known as the Radeon RX 6000 series, also known as RDNA 2, and Navi 21, at the moment. aliases than the actual confirmed specs, but AMD's Frank Azor (formerly Mr. Alienware) has teased that something may be announced tomorrow.

In a not-so-obscure tweet (via Videocardz) sent this morning (or yesterday evening, depending on your time zone), Azor croons the classic Annie song "Tomorrow" in text form. The tweet was later retweeted by Sasa Marinkovic, AMD's marketing director, so it seems likely that Azor is not merely a showtune enthusiast, but an official teaser.

The time zone thing may be important given that he may be suggesting some sort of AMD-based event "tomorrow," but whether that means September 9 or September 10, we won't know until it happens. Whatever it is...

AMD recently dropped an Easter egg on the Fortnite battle arena map: SOMETHING BIG IS COMING TO THE AMD BATTLE ARENA!" ), one had to overcome several obstacles to see the message, one of which was to enter the passcode "6000."

So before you get all enthusiastic that AMD will definitely announce a new Big Navi GPU tomorrow (or today, or whatever) via Fortnite, you might want to temper your fervent expectations a bit. The first AMD cards won't appear until October or later, and add-in board (AIB) partners are expected to announce their own designs in November.

We have spoken to several AIBs and they do not even know the name of the next generation AMD RDNA 2 card yet. All we can say is that it will feature the Navi 21 GPU.

So while it may still be a little while before the new RX 6000 series graphics cards are fully revealed in the flesh, that doesn't mean AMD won't drop something big on the Battle Arena map.

Or maybe even a full rendering of the cards that will eclipse the sun.

With Nvidia about to announce the RTX 3080 in earnest on September 14, I would be very surprised if AMD doesn't want to put out some kind of teaser about their new high-end graphics card ahead of that date.
