Skull & Bones is not dead, but we won't see the rest of the story until next year.

Ubisoft revealed "Skull & Bones" back in 2017, and it has been drifting in purgatory ever since. Originally slated for a 2018 release, it was pushed back to 2019, then 2020, and now the vague future. But apparently it is still going on, and has a "new vision."

In a blog post today, Creative Director Elizabeth Perren shared an update that was not really an update, providing few details while trying to clarify why it was postponed (several times) over the last few years.

"We dreamed of bigger things for Skull & Bones. These difficulties caused much needed delays in our game." How do you modernize a pirate fantasy classic? How do we create a more immersive and intuitive experience? How can we create cool and memorable moments in the game?" it was clear that more development time was needed to answer most of these questions.

What this big new vision of pirate gaming actually looks like is unfortunately still unclear; in July it was rumored to have changed from the usual Ubisoft open-world formula to a live-service type game, apparently a living story, community elements, and player-initiated world events. Sounds familiar.

Skull & Bones will skip Ubisoft's forward today. Apparently it will finally reappear next year, but we don't know when, and the dates are always shifting, so don't hold your breath.
