Apple Suspends Plan to Stop Apple ID Login for Epic Games

Update: Apple has offered an "indefinite extension" to the Apple ID login feature. This means that Apple users will still be able to log into Fortnite and other Epic games. However, in case this login option is discontinued in the future, Epic recommends that all users ensure that their account username and password are updated.

Players of Fortnite and other Epic games who currently sign into their accounts using an Apple ID will soon have to make other plans. The studio announced today that it will discontinue the feature "as early as September 11" due to an ongoing legal dispute with Apple.

To continue accessing your account, you must log in to the "General Settings" page on epicgames.com and update your account with your current email address and new password. If you are unable to change your password, the normal "forgot password" process should resolve the issue.

Epic was subsequently granted a temporary restraining order preventing Apple from blocking access to its development tools and preventing it from updating Unreal Engine on the platform, but at the same time it asked for Fortnite to be returned to the App Store, which was denied.

Yesterday, September 8, Apple filed a countersuit against Epic, alleging breach of contract (among other things) and demanding "compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorney's fees, and interest." Also calling Epic's lawsuit "nothing more than a basic disagreement over money," Epic CEO Tim Sweeney made a series of tweets earlier today:
