Destiny 2" Revives Ritual and Adept Weapons with Beyond Light

Bungie continues to dribble out Beyond Light information in its weekly "This Week at Bungie" blog, this week focusing on Destiny 2's core activities and associated loot. In this post, Bungie announced the return of the Pursuit Weapon, a special curated gun that can be earned through a (usually lengthy) quest to play Strike, Crucible, or Gambit.

A brief history of Destiny 2's "chase" loot, which in Year 2 came in the form of pinnacle weapons with unique perks and were some of the most powerful guns in the game: the "Mountaintop," "Recluse," "Revoker," "21% Delirium" Wendigo GL3, and Loaded Question are still used regularly.

In the third year, the pursuit was downgraded to a ceremonial weapon. It now offers select rolls from the existing perk pool. Previously, each season had an apex/ritual weapon for each of the three core activities, but Season of the Worthy featured only one ritual weapon associated with Iron Banner; Season of Arrivals has no ritual weapons at all; and Season of the Worthy has no ritual weapons at all.

In Year 4, rituals will return, but again, there appears to be only one per season. This time, however, players will be able to choose how they obtain their loot. Players will be able to choose whether to take the Strike, Crucible, or Gambit quests, each of which will also add an ornament quest to change the appearance of the gun.

As for the gun itself, it certainly looks a lot like the "Beloved" sniper rifle that still appears regularly in Crucible matches. According to the filename in the image, the gun is called Adored, a fun reference to the name revealed by the previously leaked WishYaLukk. This may lend credence to Wish's other Beyond Light claims.

As for armor, Bungie has also announced a new set that will be rolled out for core activities, each featuring specialized decals and shaders. It appears that the armor in this playlist will only be updated annually from now on, so it will be a while before we can wait for something new. You can see the fourth year set at the top of the page. I must confess that I am not a fan. The Warlock set looks almost identical to the other sets I already have. Bungie, for God's sake, what is going on with the Warlock helmets?

As for the activities themselves, Bungie has also made it clear how it will streamline its offerings: the strikes, crucibles, and gambits in Destiny 2 have accumulated a lot of baggage over the years, much of which is now being scaled back. Gambit, for example, is an adjusted version of Gambit Prime, merging them into one mode that is balanced to avoid the armor perks of Prime. The frequency of aggression is reduced and the boss phase is adjusted to be faster. Also, Taken Captains will no longer be dispatched as blockers.

Finally, Trials of Osiris revealed the return of "adept" weapons for players aiming for "perfection". Originally part of Destiny 1, the Adept weapon now features a third perk that makes it slightly better than the base version, and while the loot system in Trials mode still needs a major overhaul, this means that Trials players finally have a reason to strive for "perfection". Bungie plans to add Adept weapons to Strikes as well, but this will not happen before the end of the year.
