Having surpassed the astronomical $300 million mark in crowdfunding in June (now at $313 million), Star Citizen will once again host "free-fly" sessions over the next few weeks.

This time, Star Citizen community members will be able to choose a free-flyer from a pool of 16 ships selected to "represent the best and most iconic spaceships in the game." This annual event, called the "Ship Showdown," will be voted on by the community to determine the best of the best. I don't know if it means anything more than bragging rights, but if you're impressed by what you see and want to commit, discounts on starter ship packs are offered as well.

The latest Free Fly trial period is open to all new players and runs through September 23. More information and registration links are available at robertsspaceindustries.com.
