Risk of Rain 2 developers plan major "expansion" and increased mod support

Although "Risk of Rain 2" does not support the Steam Workshop, it has nonetheless managed to build a thriving mod scene, encouraged and supported by its developer, Hopoo Games. For example, as we mentioned in our August collection of the best mods, the studio includes code checks in the release of the full game to make it easier for gamers who have installed mods to play along.

In an update posted over the weekend, the studio stated that it hopes to further expand support for player-created mods in future updates, but at this stage it is still working out the details.

"We are always excited to see the growing mod community for RoR2. We love seeing your creative work, your thoughts on the game, and your truly out-of-the-box designs. Supporting mods is something we really wanted to be able to do officially, and with each content update we snuck in a few changes to support that community."

"One of our other goals going forward is to make it easier for modders to have an easier time with RoR2. We don't know the exact form of that yet, especially since there are so many moving parts, but we hope to be able to support the mod community."

Hopoo said that another content update will be released on all platforms "as a final thank you to all our players and to ourselves." At this time, there is no timeline for that update, but the goal is to complete some of the "internal content" that the studio was forced to cut during Early Access, and to give the entire game one more look based on player feedback.

Beyond that, the studio plans to focus on larger "expansions" with themes such as "Void Expansion" and "Imp Expansion," with "multiple content updates" once or twice a year. According to the studio, there are two reasons for this approach:

Traditional patches that include quality of life improvements, bug fixes, balance changes, etc. will continue to be released as free updates to everyone.

Risk of Rain 2 will also "soon" appear on Stadia and include a new fourth stage alternative map for the platform called Sundered Grove, developed by Ghostpunch Games, the indie studio that helped develop Risk of Rain 2. The game will be released in the U.S. in the fall of 2012.
