The next chapter of "Delta Rune" will be published in 2020, says Toby Fox.

In an update to Undertale's home page, sole creator Toby Fox shares his thoughts on the game's fifth anniversary and details the development of its sequel, Deltarune.

The first chapter of Deltarune will be released on Halloween 2018, and Fox plans to release the rest of the game chapter by chapter. Fox also admits that Deltarune has been a challenge to develop because its scope is much larger than Undertale. He cites some of the more complex aspects, such as systems and graphics, and also notes that there is considerably more content overall in Deltarune than in Undertale. As Fox himself notes, all of this is a huge undertaking for someone who has only made one game, and currently "Deltarune" is actually being developed with the help of a small team.

Fox says that he spent "mainly the past two years writing, composing, designing, and drawing" for the complete outline of Deltarune, and after looking for an alternative to GameMaker, the engine used in Undertale, he eventually He decided to return. As a result, Fox feels "very confident" that he can deliver a second chapter of Deltarune by the end of 2020. He even gives a complete breakdown of the progress on each aspect of the game, from battle and cut-scene implementation to bug fixes and translations.

He is also very open about the physical toll of game development and how his physical limitations make the process difficult, stating: "Development has been difficult, especially because of my physical disability.

"I have suffered from wrist and hand pain for a long time, and about five months ago, my wrists were in the worst shape they have ever been in. I couldn't play the piano, use the mouse, and could barely use the keyboard."

Because of this, the Deltarune team may continue to grow. This post includes a list of points where Fox suggests that help may be needed to provide a third chapter. The list of species and requirements is included in the blog post, and submissions can be made through the end of September.

A release date for Deltarune Chapter 2 has not yet been set, and Fox feels that "the actual time value may be about 50%." This post once again exemplifies how hard game development can be, but it is nice to hear from a dedicated developer who is trying to pace himself and take care of his health.
