Browser game "City Guesser" looks like GeoGuessr, but with video (and it's free)

Do you miss traveling? To visit other countries and cities? Do you miss walking around in your own city, surrounded by a crowd of people? That hasn't happened to me much this year.

Just as importantly, do you miss playing GeoGuessr, the browser game where you jump into random places on Google Maps Street View and guess where you are? These days, you have to pay to play GeoGuessr. It doesn't cost that much, but the fact that you have to pay probably keeps a lot of people away.

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you might like City Guesser, a browser game similar to GeoGuessr, but it uses video and is free.

When you launch the game, you are presented with a full-screen (sometimes 4K) video of a city somewhere in the world. The cameraman will usually walk around for a while so you can start gathering clues as to where you are. When you think you know which city you are in, click the "Start Guessing" button at the bottom of the screen. A pop-up map will appear, scroll down to guess, and see how close you are.

Sometimes a video can give you a little clue. In the video I played, the camera tilted to reveal the unmistakable statue of Christ the Redeemer, which was a pretty big (and tall) clue. There may also be signs indicating where we are. But there are also many videos where you have to make a solid guess by combining clues such as license plates, storefronts, and familiar streets. There is also audio, so you might hear someone speaking a particular language. If your guess is within a mile of the correct location, confetti will fly in celebration.

City Guesser can be played with cities all over the world, or you can focus on cities in the US, Europe, Canada, Asia, or any other continent or country. There is also a game just for monuments.

Try City Guesser; it's not as challenging as GeoGuessr, but even if it's virtual, it's honestly really nice to get out of the house and walk around in the crowds for a while.
