Twitch Announces Immediate Withdrawal of Stereotypical Emotes

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15, Twitch will feature a different Hispanic streamer on its home page each day, host a virtual summit by the nonprofit Latinx in Gaming, and more. The company announced a number of initiatives.

To spread support for Twitch chat, the initiative also included customizing emotes that could be purchased with channel points. The customizations presented in the initial announcement included sombreros, maracas, and guitars to represent the guitarĂ³n mejicano (not actually a guitar, but a traditional Mexican six-string acoustic bass).

Following widespread criticism on social media for equating Hispanic culture with one nation and using stereotypical images to do so, Twitch publicly apologized for being "clearly off the mark," before removing the original post and all other social media removed references to the emote from the announcement.

This comes after Twitch released a video in support of "Black Lives Matter," which overwhelmingly features white streamers, and introduced plans to test mid-roll ads that are not influenced by streamers at all.
