Ubisoft Announces New "Splinter Cell" and "Assassin's Creed" Games for Oculus VR

In July 2019, we reported rumors that VR versions of "Splinter Cell" and "Assassin's Creed" were in the works; in September 2020, Ubisoft and Facebook confirmed those rumors were correct as part of their Oculus Connect event.

The exact titles have not been revealed at this time, but Ubisoft has stated that they will be "new chapters" in their respective game series. Development of both titles will be led by Red Storm Entertainment, with support from Ubi's Dusseldorf, Mumbai, and Reflections studios. [Elizabeth Loverso, Vice President of Product Development at Ubisoft Red Storm, said, "We are always looking for new ways to leverage technology to create memorable gaming experiences, and Oculus' state-of-the-art hardware is a great addition to our Assassin's Creed" and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" to fans in new ways. These games will take full advantage of Oculus technology to bring players an immersive and visceral experience like no other."

The announcement continues what Ubisoft has been painstakingly trolling Splinter Cell fans for years: while Assassin's Creed fans have been well supplied for over a decade, Sam Fisher fans have been waiting for years for a "Splinter Cell " have been waiting for a new "Splinter Cell" film: Fisher has appeared in the "Ghost Recon" game, become a playable character in a mobile game, entered "Rainbow Six Siege," and will have his own animated series on Netflix.

And now a VR game. It could be a very good VR game, and I hope it is, but according to the August 2020 Steam hardware survey, 1.70 percent of Steam users own a VR headset, and most Splinter Cell fans, no matter how good it is, can't touch It means that they can't.

Both Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed games announced today will be sold exclusively on the Oculus VR platform. Speaking of which, Facebook also officially announced the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset today. It is now available for pre-order and will begin shipping in October.
