Ray Tracing Comes to Fortnite

Raytracing has officially been introduced to Fortnite, Epic Games announced on its blog. Players using compatible Nvidia GPUs and DirectX12 can now enable ray tracing and Nvidia's DLSS feature.

The update includes all the usual improvements one would expect from ray tracing. Improved reflections and shadows chiefly include ambient occlusion and real-time global illumination.

But don't take our (or Epic's) word for it; Epic and Nvidia worked together to create a custom mini-game map for Creative Mode. The map is basically a giant museum full of little challenges, all wrapped up in a glossy, highly reflective package. The creative code is 9189-0518-5408.

If you can't dive into "Fortnite" now, Epic offers two images that show the difference ray-tracing makes.

According to Epic's blog post, Nvidia's DLSS feature increases frame rates while using ray tracing, which makes sense since ray tracing is still a demanding feature for many GPUs. Nvidia offers three DLSS Nvidia's Reflex feature is another part of the new update and works to reduce CPU load and latency in GPU-intensive scenes. For more information on Nvidia, click here.

The big question on every Fortnite player's mind. Will your PC be able to run "Fortnite" ray tracing, and Epic has published detailed system requirements for how strong your rig needs to be.

Minimum Requirements

DirectX 12 required CPU 4 cores or higher GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or higher (with updated drivers.) Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update, build number 18362 or later)

Recommended system requirements:

DirectX 12 required. CPU 8 cores or higher GPU NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 or higher (with updated drivers.) Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update, build number 18362 or later)

To turn on the ray tracing feature in Fortnite, simply go to the in-game settings menu. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, where you will see options for Raytracing, DirectX Version, Shadows, Reflections, Ambient Occlusion, and Global Illumination, and restart your system there.
