Disintegration Ends Multiplayer Support

Disintegration, an FPS/RTS hybrid, didn't quite catch us off guard when it previewed in February and landed with a thud when it was released in June. Developer V1 Interactive tried to get things going with a free weekend campaign, which never bodes well for a game that has only been on the market for a month, but it failed to spark any lasting interest, and today V1 and publisher Private Division announced that they are discontinuing multiplayer player support.

"We have made the difficult decision to remove Disintegration's multiplayer mode from our games on all platforms. This will be done in phases over the next few months, beginning with the removal of the in-game store today and ending with the complete removal of multiplayer on November 17," they said in a joint statement on disintegrationgame.com.

"The single-player campaign will remain fully playable.

"From both the development team at V1 Interactive and the publishing group at Private Division, we support the creative risks taken to launch such a unique and genre-defying game. While the player base showed interest in a single-player campaign, the game unfortunately struggled to capture the large audience needed for an engaging multiplayer experience. [This is both a disappointing and somewhat surprising ending, considering that "Disintegration" received a fair amount of publicity when it was announced that former "Halo" creative director Marcus Lett and "SOCOM" director Mike Gutman would helm the project. However, it seems that players were not differentiated: according to Steam Charts, "Disintegration" had a peak concurrent player count of only 120 at launch in June, which jumped to 539 on the first day of the free weekend, but by the following Monday, the double-digit It had dropped to the low teens. The peak number of simultaneous players over the past 30 days was only 27.

The in-game store is gone, but players currently playing Disintegration can still use credits earned or purchased in-game through November 17. After that, all multiplayer options, including crews and maps, will be removed. More details (but that's really all there is to it) and a link to Private Division's customer support for any further help needed can be found in the "Multiplayer Termination FAQ."
