U.S. government, which banned WeChat, looks to Tencent's gaming ties

When U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order in August banning the Tencent-owned WeChat app, there was speculation that the Chinese conglomerate's vast gaming portfolio would also come under scrutiny. Tencent owns Riot Games and has a 40% stake in Epic Games.

Bloomberg reports that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US has sent a letter to companies including Riot Games and Epic Games regarding their handling of personal information security.

The motivation would be the same one that prompted the presidential orders banning WeChat and TikTok. In those orders, Trump claimed that these apps were sharing personal data of Americans and Chinese living in the U.S. with the Chinese Communist Party.

Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that its proposal to acquire TikTok's U.S. interests was turned down by ByteDance. Most recently, Oracle and Wal-Mart have teamed up to acquire a majority stake in the company.
