Linux Update May Have Leaked AMD Big Navi's Huge Core Specs

The summer of leaks continues. This time, all eyes are on AMD's next-generation GPUs based on the RDNA 2 architecture, which will be detailed on October 28, when an enterprising Redditor (via Tom's Hardware) exploring the Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) code discovered what appears to be a list of specifications for AMD's two What appears to be a list of specifications for AMD's next-generation GPUs.

Two GPUs codenamed Sienna Cichlid (Navi21, or Big Navi) and Navy Flounder (Navi22 or 23) have been detailed. The most interesting fact here is that Big Navi seems to confirm the rumor that it will be an 80 CU (compute unit) chip, while Navy Flounder appears to be a 40 CU. Multiply the top three numbers in the table to get the number of CUs. According to the documents, Big Navi has a 256-bit memory bus, while Navy Flounder seems to have a 192-bit memory bus.

It is too early to say what these numbers have to do with performance or if they are even accurate, but the general rumor is that Big Navi should not be far behind the performance of the Nvidia RTX 3080. If true, it could make for some interesting competition that we haven't had in years. We will have to wait and hope.

As for the Navy Flounder, it appears to be the successor to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, but with a newer RDNA 2 architecture and support for real-time ray tracing, among other goodies. Of course, we still don't know about performance or pricing, but hopefully AMD will keep Nvidia honest throughout the entire stack.

AMD still has a little over a month before these cards are officially announced, but at this point we should assume that the basic hardware will not change. Still, these specs should be taken with a pinch of salt, as they are not official, even though they appear to be from legitimate sources.
