Among Us 2" was cancelled and the ongoing production of the game was given priority.

A month after its announcement, the sequel to "Among Us," the "multiplayer space mystery" that suddenly became a huge hit, has been canceled. Studio Innersloth opted to continue development (and revisions) of the original game.

According to Innersloth's announcement, the codebase for "Among Us" is unwieldy and outdated, but given its sudden popularity, it made sense to continue working on it. Of course, that means a lot of work to adapt it to a much larger player base than the studio anticipated.

"We decided to cancel 'Among Us 2' and instead focus all our efforts on improving 'Among Us 1. All the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will be put into Among Us 1 instead."

"This is perhaps a more difficult choice because it means going deeper into the core code of the game and reworking some parts.

The studio will be busy. After the game's meteoric rise to Twitch popularity, its servers have been hit hard and are still being dealt with. More excitingly, color blindness support, new stages, and a friend system are on the way.

When announcing the sequel last month, Innersloth said the original game "wasn't built to be this big," and as a result "it's very hard to add a lot of stuff without breaking existing stuff." Still, splitting up the player base for such a seemingly niche title is a big risk, and it would be a wise move to modify the game that people already have.
