Spellbreak attracted 5 million players.

Spellbreak launched on the Epic Games store on September 3, which means it has gained this many players in less than a month.

Spellbreak stays fairly true to the standard battle royale formula, with players dropping into a reduced map filled with loot. Players run around, equip themselves, kill other players, and hopefully end up as the last mage standing. What makes it fascinating is the magic.

Pick up an arcane glove that allows you to manipulate elemental magic, throw bolts of ice or summon walls of flame. The effects are big and flashy, and especially in the first game of Spellbreak, with so many bots, victory is almost guaranteed; it's not obvious that you're playing against an AI, so at least for that brief moment you can feel like you're good at the game.

Playing against each other in a battle royale is great fun, but its unfolding is incredibly tedious. I no longer have the patience to open chests, run around, and upgrade my equipment. Spellbreak doesn't have the tension of PUBG; it just feels a bit busy as you methodically clear out buildings and sneak through islands.

If you're interested in beating people up with elemental magic, you can get it for free at the Epic Games Store. If you pop over to the forums, you can enter the Spellbreak giveaway campaign, which could net you a ton of gold and some nice outfits.
