Binding of Isaac Repentance is a sequel-sized DLC to be released in December

"Binding of Isaacs" is nearly a decade old, but developer Edmund McMillen isn't done yet: in 2014, he created the remake "Rebirth" and the expansion "Afterbirth" and even its expansion "Afterbirth+"! and even its expansion, "Afterbirth+". And now we are about to get "Repentance," due out at the end of the year.

McMillen says Isaacs will never really be finished, but if this is the conclusion to Isaacs' nightmarish exploration of Hell's underground, it will likely end with great success. McMillen claims that "it's basically a sequel at this point," but judging by the list of features, that's not a half-hearted boast.

More than 25 new bosses, 100 new enemies, and a total of more than 700 new items, about 130 of which are new. New quests, chapters, and even a final boss will lead Isaac to experience over 5,000 new room designs.

It is based on the huge mod "Antibirth," which McMillen invited the mod team to create as an official expansion; "Repentance" will be considerably larger than "Antibirth," but the original mod still introduced thousands of new rooms, nearly 100 items, and even features the original soundtrack.

Last year, McMillen said he would not work with Nicalis, the company that published "Rebirth" and worked on the console ports of "The Binding of Isaac" and "The End is Nigh" on future projects. Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez has been accused of forcing employees to drink, using racist language, and engaging in exploitative behavior, and McMillen is working on a port of "The Legend of Bum-bo" and the upcoming console version of "Mewgenics" elsewhere The company was forced to take its business elsewhere.

However, "Repentance" was announced by Nicalis in a nifty teaser after 2018, McMillen said it would be released as originally planned, and the company is still publishing.

A Steam page is up now, but details on the full expansion will have to wait. The page teases new features, quality-of-life improvements, and tons of secrets; McMillen says that blog updates will be coming regularly starting in late October, and that the game is scheduled to launch on December 31. I can't think of a better way to end 2020 than fighting monsters while covered in shit up to your knees.
